7th Annual Gumbo Throwdown

Benefitting Fresh Start for Children and Families!

First City Bank of Florida is pleased to invite you to the 7th Annual Gumbo Throwdown on Thursday, October 26th from 5:30 PM -7:30 PM. Come out and enjoy a New Orleans style gumbo competition with live music, gumbo tasting, beignets, beer & wine through the teller line as well as door prizes and raffle drawings. As always, there will be celebrity judges to pick the overall gumbo winner as well as a "People's Choice" category!

The benefitting charity, Fresh Start for Children and Families, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has housed families in crisis, helping them achieve self-sufficiency for more than 30 years. Last year alone, Fresh Start responded to nearly 11,000 calls for help with free or reduced housing for 175. The organization is funded in part by United Way of Okaloosa and Walton Counties, area churches, and through the Repeat Street Thrift Store located at 10 Walter Martin Road in Fort Walton Beach.

There will be a $10.00 general admission fee at the door, benefiting Fresh Start for Children and Families.

We are looking forward to another great event!

A safe place to Learn, Play and Grow!

A Project and Programs for our Children

In 2015, a fellow non-profit (Okaloosa-Walton Childcare Services) recognized the need for children's activities within the growing Fresh Start's programs, and designated a $40,000 donation for this future project. Since that time, Fresh Start leadership has been working with the owners of a parcel of land adjacent to our housing properties.

In the winter of 2016, we finally made contact, and began negotiations that resulted in the purchase of that property, which closed in June 2017. While those negotiations were ongoing, our Fundraising and Grants Committee partnered with staff to submit applications for funding to both the Destin Charity Wine Auction (DCWAF) Foundation, and IMPACT 100 NWFL.

We were delighted to host a "site visit" from IMPACT 100 NWFL to share information on our organizations programs, plans, and to tour the project site. We are honored to be finalist in their program and associated with such an amazing organization.

In the meantime? Our leaders, volunteers, and supporters don't sit back and wait. We got to work! Our friends at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church started saving collections from their Sunday School classes. Our friends at Crosspoint Church sent a team over to help cleanup and clear the lot so we would be "shovel-ready." Under the direction of our Board Project Manager, they spent three full days raking, lifting, bagging and hauling trees and debris.

We have since applied for a grant through Lowes, and will apply for funding through Cox Communications. We have letters of commitment and support from local churches who are raising money at Sunday School, and board members who are ready to kick in sweat equity and personal funds for any shortfalls. We are fully committed to providing our children a safe place to learn, play, and grow!

Repeat Street We are in need of friendly people who want to spend a few hours per week volunteering at our beautiful and busy Thrift Store.

We have lots of great folks, but because we are SO blessed with donations and shoppers we need MORE friendly people! More cashiers, more donation sorters, delivery drivers, etc. If you have time, energy, and a smile we can use you!

Volunteer Spotlight Barbara has gone above and beyond her calling as a new member of our Board. She has started strong with our Education Committee, and also kicked off the New Year for our resident's Life Skills Classes. Thank you for your hard work, time, and dedication to Fresh Start. You have already changed so many lives here and we cannot wait to see our Education Committee continue to grow and be a huge success due to your leadership!
